Top-10 finish would do wonders for Newcastle says Enrique

Newcastle United left-back Jose Enrique says a top-10 finish would be a great result for the club this season.

The Magpies have had a mixed bag of results in the top flight this term after comprehensively winning the Championship title last season and find themselves sitting 11th on the table.

With two matches remaining, against Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion, Enrique has urged his teammates to push for a top-half finish as a way to attract new players to the club for the next campaign and beyond.

"To finish in the top 10 is important this season," he told the Evening Chronicle.

"We'll see what happens next year and which players come to us.

"We have a great squad here though, and we have been very unlucky with injuries.

"Next season we will hopefully get new players and try to build on a top-10 finish."

He also said that finishing higher on the table than Tyne-Wear derby rivals Sunderland would be a huge win for the Geordies.

"It would be very nice for us to finish ahead of Sunderland," added Enrique.

"I remember they were happy to see us go down, but now we are in the Premier League and we have been better than them so far - it's important we keep going."
