Tommy Wright: Newcastle had our own Class of '92 (just like Man Utd)

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Tommy Wright says the Magpies had their own Class of '92.

While they didn't reach the heights of the Manchester United version, Wright argues the Toon youth squad could more than hold their own in comparison.

Wright told the Evening Chronicle: “I always look at the back four.

“We had Steve Watson who was a teenager, Steve Howey still very young, Kevin Scott a bit older and Robbie Elliott.

“We were talking about the Class of 92 the other day. But Newcastle had their own Class of 92 you could say.

“Steve Watson, Steve Howey, Lee Clark, Alan Thompson and Robbie Elliott were all local lads who went on to play in the first team.

“There were others in the mix too like Lee Makel, Matty Appleby and Alan Neilson.

“For us to produce six or seven players who went on to play for either their country or the top level was fantastic.

“OK, unlike the Class of 92, we didn't win anything.

“But some of those lads were part of the Entertainers side that came close.

“Most of them came from Wallsend Boys Club. It was really a golden period of bringing young local players through the ranks and into the first team."
