Mexico national team boss Miguel Herrera has called Toluca's Miguel Ponce into his 23-man preliminary World Cup squad.
The 25-year old USA-born defender/midfielder has been selected to replace injured Club America ace Juan Carlos Medina.
California native Ponce, who is on loan at Toluca from Chivas de Guadalajara, has played six times for El Tri in the past and has been brought in by Herrera to provide depth and cover on the left side.
The Mexican Soccer Federation (FMF) have confirmed that Medina, who was included in the initial 23, has been forced to withdraw because of an ankle injury.
"During the the team training these past few days Juan Carlos Medina suffered an injury to his right ankle. Upon medical studies it was determined that there was ligament damage in the ankle and will require immediate surgery," read a FMF statement.
"Medina has been dropped from the squad that will participate in the World Cup in Brazil. The head coach and his staff have called upon Miguel Ponce from Club Toluca to take his place."
Mexico are preparing for Brazil 2014 where they take on hosts Brazil, Croatia and Cameroon in Group A. Their first group stage fixture is against the Cameroonians in Natal on June 13.
