Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley believes the Toffees' progression to the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy is an ideal building block for the upcoming Premier League season.

Everton will take on Arsenal in the pre-season tournament's decider on Saturday after defeating Stoke City in a penalty shootout in Singapore on Wednesday.

Cleverley was one of five Everton players to convert from the spot after a scoreless 90 minutes.

"It's great to be in the final," Cleverley told evertontv.

"Any tournament you enter you want to be in the final.

"We're happy, we had the better chances in the 90 minutes – although it was hard work out there because of the heat.

"I thought we deserved to win in the end."
