Thornley Exclusive: Inside word on Man Utd coaches Carrick & McKenna

Manchester United assistants Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna are "invaluable" components of Jose Mourinho's first team set-up.

That is according to Class of 92' star Ben Thornley.

Former United player Carrick took up a coaching role after he retired from playing at the end of last season. McKenna, a former youth player with Tottenham Hotspur, was United's U18 coach before earning a promotion to Mourinho's backroom staff.

Both were brought in to replace Mourinho's long time assistant Rui Faria, who departed last season.

Manchester Evening Newsreported earlier this month that Carrick and McKenna were popular within the United squad.

Thornley now works as analyst for MUTV and he has also heard great things about the duo's impact at Old Trafford.

"Invaluable," Thornley told TribalFootball.comwhen asked about the impact of Carrick and McKenna.

"I spoke with Kieran on the touchline before the Bournemouth game and he's a very knowledgable guy, very calm, the same as Michael.

"And obviously he had great success with the U18's team, highly respected at Manchester United and thoroughly deserves it.

"He's a calming influence and like Kieran, a really good knowledge of the game and he's not an animated figure if you like. Kieran and Michael are there to pass on their coaching knowledge and obviously Michael's experience as a player to the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial and some of the lads are being involved in the first team like Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong."

Carrick joined United in 2006 and would retire having won five Premier League titles, the Champions League and an FA Cup. He also won 34 caps for England during his 19-year career.

And Thornley believes the 37-year-old could come out of retirement and play for Mourinho's team, just like United legend Paul Scholes did for Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012.

He added: "With Michael you've obviously got a player that for me was very undervalued, I think if he had have been given more chance in an England shirt to free up the likes of Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes.

"I think he was an absolutely terrific player and I think he could do a job now, just like [Paul] Scholes did when he finished."
