Alan Thompson marked his coaching debut with victory as Newcastle United reserves defeated Middlesbrough 3-2.

The former Celtic and Toon midfielder told the club's website: "I've been back here six or seven months and I'm enjoying it.

"It's hard work, you don't finish at 1 o'clock like when you were a player, but I'm loving it and it's great to be back."
