Struggling Notts County have announced they have terminated manager Steve Thompson's contract at Meadow Lane with immediate effect.

The Magpies have slumped to 19th place in League Two after a run of three successive defeats which also saw the side concede nine goals.

Thompson succeeded Gudjon Thordarson in June 2006 and guided County to a comfortable mid-table finish in his first season at the helm.

Assistant manager John Gannon has been placed in charge for Saturday's derby clash with Mansfield.
