Thompson, Fowler & van Dijk close the gap on Smeltz

Melbourne Victory's Archie Thompson, North Queensland's Robbie Fowler and Brisbane Roar's Sergio van Dijk all scored on the weekend to close the gap on the league's leading scorer. Thompson netted a double against Gold Coast United on Saturday night to go to eight for the season, just three behind Golden Boot leader Shane Smeltz who was unable to stop the Victory onslaught as the reigning champions won 4-0 at Etihad Stadium.

Fowler scored an important goal for the Fury as they defeated Adelaide United 2-1 to jump to nine for the season whilst van Dijk helped the Roar demolish Wellington Phoenix 4-1 with a late goal to move with Thompson to eight.

The race is certainly now on for the league's leading goalscorer title despite the fact Smeltz still holds a two-goal lead over the rest of the pack.

A-League goalscoring table - Round 16
