Outgoing Newcastle Jets captain Matt Thompson is determined to leave the club on a high.

The 27-year old decided to quit the club and sign with incoming A-League franchise Melbourne Heart last week but will remain with the Jets until the end of the season.

In between now and then, the Sydney-born winger wants to repay the faith the Jets fans have had in him for his entire career at the club and also since his decision to depart.

"The fans have been fantastic (since the news of the Melbourne Heart move) and that's something that means a lot to me. It really does," Thompson told fourfourtwo.com.

"We had a great result at Sydney last week. Personally it was great to be on the scoresheet but it was a great team effort.

"I still have the remainder of this season with Newcastle Jets and that's what I'm focused on."

Thompson admitted his team was in a very precarious position at this point in time but with a few positive results, starting this Friday against Adelaide United, and things can change dramatically such is the nature of the A-League this season.

"We want to avoid the wooden spoon, of course we do, but it isn't the height of our ambitions. Absolutely not," he added.

"A win or a couple of wins and you're up there challenging, it's that close. Adelaide are at home and they'll be looking to get a result in front of their fans. But we go there determined and want to open up a gap between us."
