Thanksgiving weekend helped us sign Saborio – RSL owner Checketts

Real Salt Lake majority owner Dave Checketts admitted that his decision not to deal with Swiss club FC Sion before Thanksgiving weekend helped the club complete the complex signing of Alvaro Saborio.

Real Salt Lake majority owner Dave Checketts admitted that his decision not to deal with Swiss club FC Sion before Thanksgiving weekend helped the club complete the complex signing of Alvaro Saborio.

The 28-year old Costa Rican forward was on loan with the Royals this season but the club was keen to bring him in permanently.

Checketts said that keeping Sion waiting over the Thanksgiving holiday helped the MLS club clinch the four-year deal.

“The main thing we had to decide to do was sit on it during Thanksgiving weekend,” Checketts told The Salt Lake Tribune. “I just believed that that club in Switzerland, as tough as they are … did not want to go out and shop [Saborio] coming off the surgery and him saying, 'I want to stay here and I don't want to go anywhere else.' I thought we had more leverage than (general manager) Garth (Lagerwey) probably thought we did.

“I just said, look, we have till December 1. We're going to go enjoy the holiday. Don't place a single call. Don't send a single e-mail. Let them wonder what we're up to.

“There's no doubt (it worked). They moved a long way over Thanksgiving weekend, and when we came back, the deal was infinitely better.”
