TFC’s Nelsen banking on Defoe’s England motivation

Toronto FC head coach Ryan Nelsen believes Jermain Defoe’s England snub will benefit his team.

Toronto FC head coach Ryan Nelsen believes Jermain Defoe’s England snub will benefit his team.

The 31-year old striker was left out of Roy Hodgson’s preliminary squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup this week and although it is a disappointment, Nelsen feels it will be a major positive for the Reds who signed the former Tottenham star in February.

“You never like to take benefit from other people’s agony, if you know what I mean,” Nelsen said.

“If Jermain stays with us, he’s probably going to be motivated to prove a lot of people wrong, which I suppose is nice for us.”

Nelsen added: “Obviously devastated for Jermain. It’s surprising.

“I don’t know how Roy Hodgson picks his team. It’s a surprising decision — gutted for the man. I know I’ve played against all those guys and I know with 10, 15 minutes to go in a World Cup, I know who I’d want with the ball at his feet in front of the net.”
