Terry's rib problem tough to assess admits Chelsea's Di Matteo

Chelsea captain John Terry has been ruled out of tomorrow's home clash with Wigan Athletic because of a rib injury.

The England centre-back was withdrawn during the second half of his side's 2-1 Champions League win over Benfica on Wednesday night after receiving a knock to the area and manager Roberto Di Matteo admits the club will have to continually monitor Terry as the problem is a difficult one to assess.

"We had to take John off against Benfica on Wednesday because he sustained another knock on his rib and couldn't breathe," the Italian said.

"Now we are trying to manage the injury. He's not available for tomorrow and we have to see how quickly he can recover.

"But it's an injury that's difficult to deal with and we can't really do anything because it's in a position where it is difficult to treat it. "With a rib injury, he needs time to heal. But every time he gets a knock he will go a step back. We have to deal with the pain level and give him a bit of time to recover.

"So we will manage and assess him on a daily basis and see what we can do to make him better and be available for the team."
