Teenager Toney eyeing first-team spot at Newcastle

Ivan Toney admit he has his sights set on a first-team berth with Newcastle United.

The 19-year-old forward joined the Magpies from Northampton Town this summer and despite immediately linking up with the U21 side, he is daring to dream in his debut campaign with a Premier League club.

Northampton-born Toney has been plying his trade for his hometown club since November 2012 and feels he is now ready to have a crack at England's top flight with the Magpies

"The Football League is different to Premier League," he told the Chronicle.

"It is a fantastic standard here.

"People love getting on the ball, it is one or two touches and it is fast moving and high-tempo.

"I am looking forward to pushing on to the first team and hopefully I can squeeze my way in there.

"I have mostly spoken with Peter Beardsley at the minute because I am with the under-21s.

"I am sure the gaffer will speak to me soon and let me know what is going on.

"You just have to keep playing football and keep myself happy."
