Team spirit and some help from the fans has kept Sunderland up says Defoe

Jermaine Defoe has praised the team unity of Sunderland after the club achieved survival on Wednesday night.

The Black Cats defeated Everton 3-0 at the Stadium of Light to ensure their top flight status for next season, prompting a glowing reaction from the star striker who has netted 15 goals this term including 11 since the turn of the year.

"The fans drive the teams on to win games, it is an unbelievable feeling to stay up again and I am delighted," said Defoe.

"If you look at the great teams over the years it is all about team spirit and togetherness, the main thing has been the team spirit."
