Taylor urges Birmingham to sign rival stopper Hart

Maik Taylor says Birmingham should do everything in their power to re-sign Joe Hart for next season - even if it harms his own chances of selection again, reports the Birmingham Mail. The 38-year-old has had to kick his heels and look on in admiration as Hart has enhanced his reputation for Alex McLeish's side.

Taylor reckons Hart will become England's first choice in the very near future.

He says: "If Joe doesn't stay and someone else comes in, I'm probably more confident of having a better opportunity of getting in the side. That's the way it is.

"Joe has done that well this season. He has exceeded all expectations.

"I didn't know that much about him when he came but he has really, really impressed me.

" I think they really should - not from a personal front, but what can you do? - from a Birmingham perspective try everything in their power to persuade Man City to let him come, whether on loan or permanent.

"I really do believe he will be England's No.1 one day. No question about it.

"I think another year down the line he could be a front-runner.

"The World Cup has maybe come a year too early for him.

"I think he's been the best English goalkeeper, to be honest, over the course of the season.

"But because of a lack of experience at international level, that might be the only thing that goes against him."

Taylor, who looked sharp in Blues' last reserve game, against Chelsea on Wednesday, adds: "It's frustrating for me but a little bit easier to accept when a player in your position is doing so well.

"It doesn't matter what will happen Sunday, Joe is not missing the game through a lack of form, he's missing it through the rules.

"If I have a ten-out-of-ten performance, Joe will still be in the following week. I accept that, I know that."
