Taylor: Newcastle need to start taking risks

Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor accepts they need to start taking more risks if they're to beat the drop.

After scoring in their 1-1 draw at Hull City, Taylor said: "We are always waiting to see what happens. In the first half, especially away from home, we always seem to wait for something to happen.

"When they [Hull] scored the goal, that was the time we all had to raise ourselves. Obviously, the fans were not happy, and they had every right not to be.

"We got the goal in the last 10 minutes of the first half, and that's how we should be playing. Then we took the game to them. We should have been doing that all season, not just now.

"We have got to start taking risks if we are going to start getting results. We are going to have to start getting in the box, and having a few shots outside the box.

"The sides we are playing against aren't afraid to have a shot and follow up."

Newcastle's plight might have been even worse had Taylor not cancelled out Geovanni's early opener, and even a point was enough to keep them out of the bottom three on goal difference, and that only as a result of Middlesbrough's late equaliser against Portsmouth.

He said: "It's the most important goal I have scored, but I was disappointed and the rest of the lads were as well.

"We went there to win, and that didn't happen. We shouldn't rely on the results of teams below us to go our way."
