Brett Emerton was absolutely delighted when he heard the news that Alessandro Del Piero had signed with Sydney FC.
The Italian World Cup winner has signed a two-year deal with the Sky Blues prompting plenty of positive words from around the globe.
There were more of those on Thursday when midfielder Emerton praised the former Juventus star in his column for The Daily Telegraph.
“I can't wait to go to training this week. The excitement and optimism among the Sydney FC squad will be at an all-time high with the knowledge we have signed the great Alessandro Del Piero for this season,” he wrote.
“It has been an agonising wait for all of us. Like the rest of Sydney and football lovers across the country we've been searching high and low for information after learning that he was on our radar. We all wanted it to happen. And now it has.
“A player like Del Piero has the potential to open the doors for other big-name imports to follow him over here. He is automatically identifiable around the world and brings with him an X-factor that only the great possess.
“I truly believe this is one of the most significant days in the history of our club – and the game in Australia.”
