Manchester City's England international winger Shaun Wright-Phillips wants to avoid World Cup disappointment again. The 28-year-old was one of the unlucky ones to miss out on Sven Goran Eriksson's 23-man squad in Germany four years ago.
Wright -Phillips has again made England's preliminary party and is desperate to avoid being cut at the last minute again.
"Obviously it was a massive disappointment to miss out in 2006, but if there is lots of competition for places again this time that can only be good for the country - and that's the most important thing," said Wright-Phillips.
"You try not to get distracted by it, and it's not my decision (to pick the squad), but time will tell whether I've done enough.
"We can't change what happened to my dad in 1998. It just wasn't meant to be. All I can do is give it my best shot, but I like to think I would not let England down."
Meanwhile, Wright-Phillips insists he is more than happy being back at City despite breaking the unwritten football rule that you should never return to a former club.
"They say you should never go back in football, but I've felt at home since the moment I returned to Manchester City, " he continued. "It's as if I've come home after a long holiday.
"It's really been no different. I left behind a great club when I left to join Chelsea, and I came back to find it's still an exciting club.
"Although I didn't start as many games for Chelsea as I would have liked, I still played a part in the most successful era of their history and I believe I came back to City a better player for the experience.
"I don't look back and wonder if it cost me a World Cup place. I was sad to miss out but, like I said, if something is just not meant to be, that's the way it goes.
"I've been very happy to play with a core of English players back at City, and it's a good sign that we were chasing fourth place with a good contingent of home-grown talent like Gareth Barry, Micah Richards, Wayne Bridge, Adam Johnson and myself.
"It's a healthy sign that English players were at the forefront when Tottenham and ourselves were fighting to get into the Champions League. It's important that the cream rises to the top."
