Tate believes Dyer should have been given an opportunity to shine on the international stage.
He told talkSPORT: “[Dyer] did really well last year and he started off the season with two goals good goals at QPR.
“Am I surprised he got overlooked? On form, probably yes. In terms of geographically, no. Nathan should have been given a chance, that’s my opinion.
“We’ve got a few lads who could go and do a job for England. You’ve got Nathan, Leon [Britton] and last year you had Scott Sinclair but he’s moved on to Manchester City so his chances might improve.
“People still look at us as a one off year and they’re waiting for us to fall.”
