Swansea City are eyeing Reading defender Chris Gunter.

The Evening Gazette says the Wales defender is understood to have a £1m release clause in his contract and while Royals boss Jaap Stam wants to keep one of his star men if it is triggered the player will be free to talk to suitors.

Boro, who were keen on Gunter during their last spell in the Championship, are preparing to make their move for a solid and consistent player crucial to Reading's rigid defence in their play-off push.

But they face a battle with Premier League outfit Swansea also registering an interest while Championship rivals Aston Villa and Leeds are said to be watching developments.
