Swansea end Championship season in third place

Swansea's final game of the season was a comprehensive 4-0 defeat of already relegated Sheffield United. A third place finish for Brendan Rodgers team means a semi-final play-off showdown with Nottingham Forest.

It will be the first time the Swans have competed in the play-offs since winning promotion to the second tier in 2008, but Forest were semi-finalists last season having finished third themselves.

Rodgers said: "It is a wonderful achievement for the club to finish third.

"We have ended the season how we started at home with a 4-0 win and a fantastic performance. I want to pay tribute to the players because they are the most important people at the club.

"With all due respect, it was difficult situation for Sheffield United because they came here with 4-5-1 and they were trying to contain a team who are sometimes unplayable at home. But some of their young players played well.

"From the first minute we passed the ball, probed and were patient in our play - it was the hallmark of this team. We had good control and it was an excellent display and we are looking forward to the play-offs.

"We will be the underdogs because Forest have been in the play-offs. They have been there last year and missed out. But we have great confidence and we will relish the two games."

Sheffield United boss Micky Adams, only appointed in late December, said: "I have a meeting with the club's owners next week but I can't prejudge it.

"I don't know what will happen but I want to carry on. Absolutely. But (chairman) Mr (Kevin) McCabe will set the agenda.

"We had a lot of players from the youth team in the side today and I'm not sure if that is the right thing to do at this moment in time.

"There are four good teams in the play-offs. Swansea are a good team but I know they will not change their style of play."
