Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers hopes to add a new defender to his squad in the coming days.
Rodgers confirmed he has spoken to Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray about the availability of his captain Matthew Bates.
Rodgers said: "It is an area we want to strengthen. It's different this year in the Premier League, once you name your squad that is you all the way through to January. So we have to make sure we have enough quality players and enough reinforcements in the squad.
"I spoke to Tony about Matthew on his availability and where he was at. He has had a horrendous period with injury but did exceptionally last season and I was looking at where he was at. There are a number of players we are looking at but I won't be in a rush."
