Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers admits Marcos Senna's personal demands proved too steep for them.
Senna is now set to sign a new deal with Villarreal.
"I spoke to Marcos and our initial feedback was positive," said Rodgers in the Evening Post.
"He was keen to come but I think it may well be that the deal will end up being a bit too rich for us."
Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins added: "There is obviously a big difference between speaking to a player and actually signing them, and I'm sure a player of his standing will have been inundated with options."
