Swansea City boss Michael Laudrup drove their deal for Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.
The South Wales Evening Echo says t is understood manager Laudrup pressed for the deal on his return to South Wales after initial suggestions that Swansea were interested in the player, but not at Liverpool's £5m valuation.
It is thought Swansea believe he can provide a balance in terms of options for the midfield - especially in the role behind the striker - while also offering a greater physical presence.
The price could rise to a club record £6m if add-on clauses are met.
