Sutton: England loss proves Arsenal ace Ox can't play in a central role

Chris Sutton does not believe that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is good enough to play in a central midfield role for the England national team.

England succumbed to a 3-2 defeat against France in Paris on Tuesday and the result was a very disappointing one for the Three Lions as they played the entire second half with a man advantage, following the sending off of Raphael Varane in the first period.

Playing in a central midfield role, Oxlade-Chamberlain was one of the many England stars who failed to impress during the clash and now former Chelsea man Chris Sutton has stated his belief that the Arsenal attacker is simply not good enough to command a central position in the Three Lions starting lineup.

Sutton wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: "Tuesday night highlighted England's problems in midfield and it's clear that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is not good enough centrally.

"France carved through England in that area and Gareth Southgate's men got done far too easily — it was embarrassing. Oxlade-Chamberlain has not done himself any favours with that display. England are short of options and it's a worry.

"Jordan Henderson, absent due to injury, is looking more and more like a vital player for England, while we do not have anyone like Michael Carrick who, despite being 35, is still probably the country's best option in midfield — especially with his passing."
