Official release from Supporters' Shield Foundation
The Supporters' Shield Foundation on behalf of all Supporters of Major League Soccer congratulate the New York Red Bulls on winning the 2013 Supporters' Shield.
The Supporters' Shield Foundation was established by the members of the Independent Supporters Council to raise the necessary funds for the creation of a new Supporters' Shield. Through the united effort of both member and non-member supporters selling "I Support The Shield" scarves, the Foundation successfully achieved its goal.
The result is an award that supporters league wide now carry an ownership stake in and can proudly proclaim as their own. Over the past year that Shield has passed through countless hands as it has visited every stadium in the league, helping to fulfill the Foundation's new purpose; the preservation of the Shield's history and the promotion of the Supporter's spirit. During the Shield's travel there was no way for the Independent Supporters Council, the Supporters' Shield Foundation, or any of the supporters league wide to have known that a new incarnation of the Shield would coincide with one of the most exciting Shield races in league history.
We, the Supporters, congratulate the New York Red Bulls on winning the 2013 Supporters' Shield. This has been one of the tightest contests since the award's inception, with the winner decided by the final weekend's results. The New York Red Bulls and their supporters can stand proudly knowing that they were the best team over an entire season of play, an achievement recognized by leagues the world over. The Red Bulls have fought from the first kick to the final whistle to win this award and in so doing has rightfully earned their inscription on the Supporters' Shield and their place in its history.
The New York Red Bull Supporters will present the Supporters' Shield to their club, where it will reside, until the close of the 2014 season with the crowning of a new champion.
