Newcastle United legend Malcolm McDonald says Kevin Keegan must dump Joey Barton after he received a six-month jail sentence yesterday.

"Just watching him play, I don't think he has a future at Newcastle, and I think this just seals it really," said Super Mac.

"It never works when something like this occurs. You have to go away and make a fresh start. It's the only way - he has to move on. It will be the last throw of the dice for his career.

"I watched him in the past season and I've seen him most when he's had the benefit of playing in front of a home crowd at St. James' Park, and I'm sorry to say he's not been good enough.

"The club has been supportive, but the club has to look after itself in a situation like this. You can't let other things get in the way of seeking footballing success. Newcastle should look after their fans - they are the real diamonds.''
