Sunderland's Reid facing international exile

Sunderland midfielder Andy Reid's international hopes appear to be over.

The Daily Mail says Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has turned to Reid's Sunderland team-mate Anthony Stokes as cover for injured winger Damien Duff, even though he is on his way out of the Stadium of Light after failing to live up to his £2 million price tag in the Barclays Premier League.

Stokes has had a failed loan spell at Sheffield United cut short already this season and is currently with Championship strugglers Crystal Palace where he has also failed to make an impact.

Reid, meanwhile, has played most of the season on the left of Sunderland's midfield but he is paying for a furious bust-up with Trapattoni at the start of Ireland's World Cup campaign.
