The 22-year-old Republic of Ireland international first played alongside his Northern Ireland counterpart, 20, during their days together at Manchester United and knows what a talent he is.
McShane and loan signing Evans renewed their acquaintance in the Black Cats' ill-fated 3-0 home defeat by Wigan which ended their FA Cup hopes at the first hurdle a fortnight ago.
McShane will hope for a return to the starting line-up at Tottenham on Saturday, but knows competition for places has increased significantly since Evans' return to Wearside.
He said: "I have played with Jonny at Manchester United before and he is a good player.
"It is great to have him around because he is a good lad as well.
"I played with him when, I think, he was 16 and I was 18. He is a good player and it is great to have him around the place."
