Sunderland youngster Wickham draws inspiration from Stoke striker Walters

Sunderland teenage striker Connor Wickham admits he sees Stoke City ace Jon Walters as an inspiration.

The 18-year-old followed Walters out of Portman Road when he completed an £8m move to the Stadium of Light in the summer in search of Premier League games.

Now the pair will be reunited at the SoL this Sunday, with Wickham looking to Walters' progress as an encouraging sign.

"I know Jon very well from our time at Ipswich and he has done brilliantly for Stoke so far," he told safc.com.

"He has shown it's possible to make the step up. When he left Ipswich people questioned if he was ready, but he's shown everyone what a good player he is.

"Jon has scored goals, done well and put the performances in."
