Sunderland winger McClean quits Twitter over abuse

Sunderland winger James McClean has quit Twitter over recent abuse.

McClean has withdrawn his Twitter account after receiving death threats in the wake of his Euro 2012 call-up for the Republic of Ireland.

The Derry-born midfielder, who pledged his allegiance to the Republic rather than Northern Ireland ahead of his full international debut in Dublin in February, was singled out for sectarian abuse on Twitter following manager Giovanni Trapattoni's finals squad announcement on Monday.

And after sarcastically tweeting a riposte to his 50,000 followers he finally deleted his account on Tuesday.
