Sunderland winger Johnson targets England return

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson admits he is starting to believe he could push his way into England's World Cup squad. "Of course, I have missed it. The best thing of all is to play for England.

"A few months ago, I didn't think I had a chance but maybe I do now."

After Johnson scored in Sunderland's weekend win at Newcastle, Black Cats boss Gus Poyet highlighted his belief that the system they were playing suited the 26-year-old - and he agrees.

"Gus Poyet likes his team playing higher up the pitch and he likes to get attacking players on the ball," said Johnson, who has won 11 caps to date.

"That system suits wingers better. A lot of the time in the past, I had to run 70 yards with the ball just to get into a dangerous position. Now I'm much fresher."
