Sunderland will not appeal Bardsley charge

Phil Bardsley will begin a four-match ban on the weekend after Sunderland decided not to contest a violent conduct charge against him.

Phil Bardsley will begin a four-match ban on the weekend after Sunderland decided not to contest a violent conduct charge against him.

The Scottish full-back was charged on trial by video for stomping on the back of Chelsea’s Juan Mata on Saturday and will subsequently miss four Premier League matches.

"Sunderland has confirmed it will not be appealing the Football Association's charge against Phil Bardsley following the Premier League fixture with Chelsea on Saturday 10th September,” read a club statement.

"The FA yesterday (Tuesday) advised that the defender would be cited retrospectively following an incident involving Chelsea's Juan Mata during the first half of the fixture at the Stadium of Light."

The ban is so severe as Bardsley has already seen red this season when he was sent off against Newcastle United in the second game of the season.
