One-time Sunderland target and current Club America striker Salvador Cabanas was set to leave intensive care this week after a shooting incident over three weeks ago.
The Paraguay international was shot in the head outside a Mexico City bar and despite still having the bullet lodged in his brain, he is beginning to show signs of improvement according to Dr Ernesto Martinez.
"His progress has been very positive, he has managed well without the drip and his movements have been more agile and stronger," Dr. Martinez told a news conference.
"He even wants to get up, but we haven't let him because of the effort he would have to make.
"This means we can take him out of intensive care and put him in a room and the risk of death is diminishing."
If things go as planned, Cabanas is expected to make a full recovery and play again, although his chances of making the World Cup in June are not in the calculations.
