Sunderland striker Ryan Noble hit the winner for Hartlepool United at Yeovil Town.
Noble, in just his second appearance since a move from Sunderland, reacted quickly after Jonathan Grounds failed to clear Evan Horwood's 65th-minute free-kick.
Hartlepool boss Neale Cooper said: "We rode our luck. They could have been two or three up early in the match."
