Sunderland striker Defoe shocked by Advocaat return

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe is shocked by the re-appointment of Dick Advocaat.

Advocaat performed a dramatic U-turn this week, and signed a one year deal.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Defoe said: "I think I was shocked more than anything. It's a massive U-turn because he said he wasn't going to stay on, but he probably looked at and thought, 'you know what? Actually it's a great opportunity to go back to the club and do something special next season.'

"I can imagine everyone is delighted at the club. I think first and foremost (his success was because of) the man that he is - he was a good guy. He was straight.

"He walked in the changing rooms on the first day and just said, 'listen this is how it is'. Everyday everyone had to perform in training - training had to be 100 per cent - and who ever is performing will play, it's as simple as that.

"Away from that, he's just a really nice man. You can have a laugh with him, but when it's time to work, you work. I suppose it's similar to what I hear Jose Mourinho is like."
