Sunderland striker Defoe: England scoring return ‘hard to put in words’

Jermain Defoe admitted it was difficult to put into words his scoring return for England.

The Sunderland striker, 34, marked his first international appearance since November 2013 with the opening goal in Sunday's 2-0 win over Lithuania in World Cup qualifying at Wembley.

Defoe said he struggled to keep his emotions in check as he walked out onto the pitch with terminally ill five-year-old Bradley Lowery.

"I had to keep my emotions in the beginning with little Brad with me," Man of the Match Defoe said.

"It was special just to be back and playing with the lads is a great feeling.

"Obviously I've got to go back to my club and make sure we finish the season strong.

"I'll keep my head down and see what happens.

"It's good to be back. Just to win the game was important and we did that. It's hard to put in words really to be back."
