Sunderland will offer Micah Richards a return to the Premier League by meeting his release clause, according to reports.

It is understood that new Black Cats boss David Moyes has sanctioned a move for the Aston Villa captain who is currently preparing for life in the Championship.

The Daily Star is reporting that Sunderland will meet the £5million asking price for the 28-year-old who only joined Villa from Manchester City last summer.

Richards made 28 appearances in all competitions for Villa last term but is excepted to make a swift return to England's top flight by linking up with Moyes at the Stadium of Light.
