Sunderland are following Panathiniakos midfielder Sotirios Ninis.
The Greece international, 21, has long been admired by Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
Sunderland scouts have recommended Ninis to manager Martin O'Neill as he contemplates losing Stephane Sessegnon in the summer.
