Bordeaux midfielder Clement Chantome is on Sunderland's radar.
The Evening Chronicle says the Black Cats were one of nine clubs who had scouts at Les Girondins' 0-0 draw with Nice on Friday night.
In January Leicester City reportedly bid £2m for Chantome, a player Claudio Ranieri is also thought to have tried to sign for Monaco during his time in the Principality.
The Foxes were not in the Nouveau Stade stands on Friday – Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and a clutch of Continental clubs were – but that could be because they already know enough about the player, or have even reached an agreement with him.
The 28-year-old is free to talk to other clubs.
