Sunderland are planning a £1 million bid for Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson.
The Mirror says Bruce and assistant Eric Black watched top target Johnson score twice in Boro's 2-0 victory over Derby County - and he plans to win the chase for him as his contract runs out.
Johnson has refused a £1million-a-year deal from Boro and looks set to leave at the end of the season.
Sunderland would give Johnson, 22, a huge contract and they are also prepared to agree a fee with Boro in the next window, although it will be hard to agree the sum.
