Sunderland will have to cough up to sign trialist Max Clayton.
The Evening Chronicle says Crewe Alexandra will demand a £1 million down payment if Sunderland want to sign teenage striker Clayton.
The 19-year-old, who has represented England at all age groups from Under-16 up to Under-19, has spent a week training with the Black Cats and is also due to spend next week with the Wearsiders.
Clayton came through Crewe's highly-regarded youth system but is out of contract at Gresty Road.
