Sunderland are moving for Schalke striker Kevin Kuranyi.
The Germany international is viewed by Sunderland boss Steve Bruce as a direct replacement for Kenwyne Jones.
The Daily Mail says Kuranyi was a target for Birmingham too but they were reluctant to match his £3.5m a year wage demands.
Sunderland boss Bruce wants the Brazilian-born 27-year-old on loan first and would consider a permanent deal in the summer when he is out contract.
Kuranyi has been a target in the past for Blackburn, Everton and Fulham. All three may consider reprising a deal should he fail to agree terms at Sunderland but his wages are a stumbling block.
