Sunderland make enquiries to ex-Celtic, Villa boss O'Neill

Sunderland have reportedly made contact with Martin O'Neill regarding the vacant manager's position.

The Black Cats chairman and owner Ellis Short sacked Steve Bruce yesterday after a poor beginning to the season and the Wearside club are now on the hunt for a replacement.

Sky Sports suggests that a high-ranking Sunderland official has spoken to O'Neill and it is also believed that former chairman, and current head of international development Niall Quinn, is pushing for his appointment.

Former Blackburn Rovers, Wales, Manchester City and Fulham boss Mark Hughes is also in the running for the Stadium of Light job.
