Sunderland failed with a bid for France goalkeeper Steve Mandanda in the summer.
The Journal says sources in France claim Marseille goalkeeper Mandanda turned down a move to Sunderland during the summer.
The French international was keen to switch to the Premier League but, apparently, preferred a top 10 club.
