Sunderland remain locked in talks with West Ham United for Stewart Downing.

The Mail on Sunday says the 30-year-old winger is interested in a return to his native North East and West Ham will reluctantly consider his sale to offset some of their summer purchases.

Sunderland are offering £6 million for Downing.

The England international enjoyed a short loan spell at the Stadium of Light in 2003, and could be on his way to link up with Dick Advocaat if Sunderland stump up the asking price.
