David James is set to leave Portsmouth, it has been revealed.

The Sun says troubled Pompey hope to sign former Southampton and Fulham goalkeeper Antti Niemi, 37, on a free.

England No 1 James, 39, will then be allowed to go, with Sunderland a likely destination.

James will join the Fratton Park exodus of England players, which has seen Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Glen Johnson leave this year. They are all keen to cement their World Cup places next summer.

Niemi retired six months ago and has moved into coaching. But Pompey boss Paul Hart has been impressed by the former Finland international.
