Sunderland legend Peter Reid is delighted for Yannick Bolasie over his success with Crystal Palace.
Reid worked with Bolasie at Plymouth Argyle.
He told the Daily Star Sunday: "Lads like Yannick were in rented accommodation with landlords banging on the door for payment.
"And that was at a time when their wages were frozen.
"So it was a tough time and I'm sure Yannick appreciates what he's got now.
"He moved on to Bristol City at a time when I had to lose all my best players like Yannick, Craig Noone, Joe Mason and Bradley Wright-Phillips because of the financial situation."
Former Manchester City and Sunderland boss Reid knew Bolasie had a chance of making his name in the game because of his pace and power.
Reidy said: "He was raw when I first met him, but he had that ability to go past people.
"I first saw that in small-sides games in training.
"He had a lot to learn, but he had pace and power and that always gives you a chance."
