Despite being disappointed with the result, the 22-year-old Black Cats shot-stopper was grateful for the opportunity to play for his hometown club.
He told Sky Sports: "That's what I'm there to do really, make some saves but it's not ideal to make too many saves really but that's my job and unfortunately we conceded one.
"It's disappointing, for the full 90 minutes we had a lot of defending to do but Tottenham are a top-quality side.
"But I just need to keep playing well and keep myself focused and keep working hard and keep getting better. The more games I play, the more mature I become.
"Unfortunately, Vito [Mannone] got injured but that's what I'm here to do and be a good back-up and hopefully capitalise and keep working hard."
