Sunderland hero Julio Arca has backed Adam Johnson for success on Wearside.
The former Manchester City winger completed a £10 million move to Sunderland last week.
"Johno is a Sunderland fan and the supporters will love that he chose to come to their club instead of going to Spurs," Arca told the Sunday Sun.
"I'm sure there was a lot for Adam to think about before he made his decision.
"Spurs could offer European football, a chance to compete in the top six right away and to live in London. The other side of that is that he might not have played every game, because Spurs have other quality players like Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon.
"But Sunderland is the club he supported growing up, he will play every game there, he'll be a hero to the fans and he can be a part of what Martin O'Neill is building there.
"In the end he followed his heart and, as a former Sunderland player, I would love to see him be a success there."
